Several years ago, a number of friends from the La Grange (western Chicago suburbs) area were commenting about how many of us were being touched by some form of cancer. Whether it be family, friends or co-workers - all of us have been impacted.
A conversation ensued and thus the formation of a foundation, a charitable organization who's mission is to raise money for cancer research in the Chicago area.
Our primary goal is to raise money through a "grass-roots" effort with the notion that most fund-raising events are directed at wealthy individuals and large corporations.
Secondly, we wanted to keep the money local and support some incredible efforts by researchers at Northwestern University, Loyola and The University of Chicago. Following the inaugural Goombay event in August of 2001, the all-volunteer committee distributed $60,000 to the three research institutions.
Lastly, we wanted to earmark the proceeds for basic research. Why? Some of the most incredible findings originate from a crazy idea. But, most of the large donations do not fund these ideas until they get farther along in the process. Hopefully, these funds will help provide a more robust basic research foundation from which great cancer programs can be built.
